Reenies of Liskeard
The bottle of ale, shown below was purchased from Reenies antique shop/ historical museum in Liskeard. As was the bottle of Royal Wedding Ale and the Halina camera shown below. I behave like a little boy, re. my recent spat with Tory Bair, when I go there. I am so exited that I run from the car park down the hill past Ooghs deli (used to be owned by Charlie boy - but think he may have sold it on for a tidy bob or two). Anyway, dear reader I digress.
Reenie is not usually in the shop, but she is a very beautiful blonde lady of mature years and is very nice and will always cut a deal - if you ' ken what I mean. You are usually served, or should I say observed by her husband. He is a rather sedentary man who sits in an armchair at the back of the shop - he looks a bit like that bloke with the bolt through his neck - old thingy.
Anyway that is a good thing he is definitely not the pushy salesman type that leaps on you to ask is there anything that they can do for you - I should cocoa. He will however move, on request, when you might want an article that is carefully balanced on a twelve foot pile of china and glass. He will take it down, blow off the dust and thrust it into your hand before resuming his place in his battered armchair. He will also haggle and wrap the item in a newspaper - usually an ancient copy of The Cornish Times - if perchance you happen to make a purchase.
Now to the point - I fistly purchased the bottle of Silver Jubilee ale for 30p. "Thurs another over there" he said. "Where", says I. "Over there" he says pointing to another bottle in a completely different part of the shop. There is no such thing as organisation and order in Reenies.
It was Royal Wedding Ale -- "Hurm", I thought and being a canny Scot said will you take 50p for the pair. "Done" says he.
Well I got home and contemplated whether to drink them on the spot or store them for posterity. After all you dont crack open a rare malt too often or it soon goes. A wee sip once a year is enough.
I had assumed that the Royal Wedding Ale was of course, for the occasion that Charlie the adulterer linked up with thingy. But no - blow me down closer examination of the label revealed the following :-
Courage
Specially brewed to celebrate the wedding of
HER ROYAL HIGHNESS PRINCESS ANNE
AND CAPT. MARK PHILLIPS
at Westmister Abbey
November 1973.
Can you beat it? Visit Reenies soon but not before I do.
